Biography

As a GP in a large practice in inner city Manchester, Dr Robert Varnam has led a large multiprofessional team and pioneered improvements in quality, safety and patient experience.  He has broad experience of leadership in the local NHS, through roles in PCT leadership, practice based commissioning, service redesign and public health.  His service design work in diabetes has attracted international interest. His research at the University of Manchester employed both epidemiological and sociological perspectives on quality and safety. His PhD examined patient safety in general practice from the patient’s perspective.

In his role at NHS England he provides input on system transformation, commissioning and primary care development. He is responsible for mobilising programmes of development to promote, support and sustain primary care innovation and improvement.
