Dr Martin Duerden advises on making your practice systems safer.

Learning Objectives

After reading this article you will be asked to record your learning points and some action points to earn a suggested 1 CPD credit. Below are some suggested questions to reflect on as you work through the module:

  • Do you have a system to detect and follow-up uncollected scripts in your practice? If not, do you think you should institute one?
  • When was your repeat prescribing system last reviewed? Are there ways in which it could be made safer and more medicolegally watertight?
  • Consider discussing any medication errors which have been noted over the last year or so in the context of a significant event analysis.
  • Consider convening a meeting with your local pharmacists to exchange views on ways of minimising drug errors.
  • Do you have a system for ensuring that patients on high risk drugs such as warfarin or DMARDs are adequately monitored? Consider auditing this to see how well the system is performing.
