Module summary:
In this case-based module, Dr Alun George offers guidance on how to manage four scenarios involving prescription of drugs associated with dependence or withdrawal symptoms.

 

Learning objectives:

Working through the cases will give you the tools to:

  • Recognise which drugs are associated with dependence and withdrawals symptoms
  • Know how to discuss potential dependence or withdrawal symptoms with patients and offer appropriate advice when initiating, reviewing and discontinuing drugs
  • Recognise the key physical and psychological features of dependence on prescribed drugs and how they may present in primary care
  • Support patients who have developed dependence on prescribed drugs and manage their withdrawal
  • Identify patients at risk of dependence and know how to minimise their risk of developing it
