Casebook: Diabetes management in general practice

In this case-based module, GP specialist in diabetes Dr Stephen Lawrence guides you through a series of illustrative scenarios to provide an update on diabetes management in line with current evidence-based practice and national recommendations.

Learning objectives

This module will update you on key aspects of the management of diabetes including:

  • How to advise on ‘sick day rules’ including how to adjust medication appropriately and safely
  • Hierarchy of pharmacological treatment options in type 2 diabetes and appropriate escalation of treatment beyond metformin and SGLT-2 inhibitors
  • Potential risks and drawbacks for each of anti-diabetic pharmacological agents and how to manage these
  • How to address potential vitamin B12 deficiency with metformin treatment
  • Investigation and ongoing management of diabetic peripheral neuropathy
  • Appropriate investigation and management of new-onset diabetes in adults
