Learning Objectives
This module will explain key issues in anticoagulant prescribing including:
- When a direct-acting oral anticoagulant (DOAC) is the preferred choice of anticoagulant for stroke prevention
- When warfarin or other vitamin K antagonist is still recommended
- How to switch patients from a vitamin K antagonist to a DOAC
- What doses of DOACs to use and the appropriate monitoring
- How to manage comorbidities and drug interactions when prescribing DOACs
- Recommended anticoagulation in thromboembolic disease

Professor Ahmet Fuat is a GPSI in cardiology and honorary professor of primary care cardiology at Durham University, and Dr Paul Ferenc is a GP and PCN cardiovascular disease lead. Both are Primary Care Cardiovascular Society UK council members
