Module Summary

Experts Dr Sarah Michaels, Dr Molly Moffat and Dr Sebastian Shaw share the latest understanding of autism, including the co-occurring conditions and challenges autistic people often experience, and how GPs and their practices can improve the ways they support patients under their care.

 

Authors

Dr Sarah Michaels is a GP specialising in autism and ADHD, and Secretary of the newly formed British Association for Neurodiversity (BAND). She works with Clinical Partners, diagnosing autism and ADHD, and medicating ADHD in adults and young people.  She leads a Student Selected Unit module at the University of Exeter, for first-year medical students, on healthcare for neurodivergent patients.

Dr Molly Moffat is a GP with a special interest in autism. Alongside her work in general practice, she works as a GPwER in neurodevelopmental conditions, and is a senior associate tutor at University of Bristol.  She was previously GP clinical lead for learning disability and autism at Bath and North East Somerset, Swindon and Wiltshire ICB.

Dr Sebastian C. K. Shaw is a clinical academic based in Sussex. He is a lecturer in medical education at Brighton and Sussex Medical School, an honorary senior lecturer in neurodiversity at the University of Exeter, research lead for Autistic Doctors International, co-chair of the UK Autistic Health Research Network, and a PhD supervisor in critical autism and disability studies at London South Bank University. He is autistic himself.
