Dr Rushton was a GP for 36 years, and retired in November 2019. Then the pandemic struck and she returned working at Coronavirus clinical advisory service for NHS 111, and more recently as vaccinator and clinical oversight for various organisations in East Lancs, including on the vaccine busses. She was the National vice chair of the Family Doctor association for about 20 years. Her hobbies are writing poetry and short stories, and she is a chorister at Lancaster Cathedral.
